Bone Grafting

Bone Grafting

Missing teeth over a long period of time can cause jaw bone to be resorbed. This often results in poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for the placement of dental implants as well as shifting of remaining teeth.   Fortunately, today we have the ability to grow bone if needed. This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, but it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and aesthetic appearance.

Bone can be harvested directly from a treating patient or purchased from a bone bank.  Autogenous bone is generally better than bone purchased from a bone bank. In many cases, the bone can be harvested directly from the surgical site inside the mouth without having to go to the hip or leg to prevent potential major complications and high cost.  We do use techniques to get platelet rich plasma from patient to allow better healing of bone graft,

Bone grafting is often recommended but not always required for placement of dental implant.  With the presence of Cone Beam CT and numerous prosthetic components, many dental implant procedures could be done without the need of bone grafting.
